Match Report

SANDAL 37 – DRIFFIELD 10

This fourth against fifth league fixture saw Sandal victorious and consolidate their position in the league.

Sandal, playing up the slope, found themselves under initial pressure but once they had cleared their line started to exert pressure of their own on their East Yorkshire opponents.

The first score came when left winger Simon Frewin found himself in space 40 metres from the line. As the defence came towards him he beat two men and scored in the corner. Greg Wood converted to make the score 7-0. This quickly became 10-0 when Wood was successful with a penalty from 30 metres.

Driffield hit back with a penalty of their own from centre Masina but this only stirred Sandal into better things. Right winger Alex Orr chased his own kick through, picked the ball up, drew the defence and passed to supporting back row forward Sean Maguire who ran 20 metres to score beside the posts. Wood again converted and at 17 –3 at half time, the game was probably out of reach of Driffield.

The visitors were next to score when centre Wright breached the home defence to score under the posts and with Masina converting to make the score 17 – 10 Driffield felt they were on the up. However, Wood kicked two more penalties to stretch the lead to 23 – 10 before he scored a fine individual try of his own. Having shown initial hesitancy Wood saw a gap in the Driffield defence and showing a fine turn of pace beat the covering defence to score wide on the right. His conversion made the score 30 – 10.

At this stage with 15 minutes left, Sandal coach Jim Kilfoyle introduced all three replacements including young scrum half Gareth Newman for his first team debut.

The final score was not long in arriving and went to highly effective back rower Maguire who had a fine all round game. Inside centre Andy Hall, who also had an outstanding game, made a break and timed his pass perfectly for Maguire to sprint away from the Driffield defence and score wide on the left. Dan McCormack was successful with the conversion and the final score of 37 – 10 left Sandal with a highly satisfactory result.
